Buck Johnson’s interview with Protodeacon Patrick Mitchell centered on “Orthobros”: a much-bandied-about moniker within the Orthosphere and one occasionally mentioned in the dinosaur media. What exactly is this phenomenon? Is it an ad hominem meant to further castigate men and malign manly sick souls in need of the hospital? Or is it just an innocent descriptor of the male-heavy converts entering Orthodoxy? Should these brothers in Christ be “checked,” as some gatekeepers claim? Or are they merely our young masculine neighbors who are seeking the Truth, healing, love, and pastoral care of the Church? Take a listen and decide for yourself.
Buck is the host of the Counterflow Podcast, a thought-provoking show which explores the intersections of faith, culture, and dissident politics. Buck is a longtime firefighter, a professional drummer, and a native Texan.
Protodeacon Patrick is a widely published scholar of Orthodox theology and Church history. A former soldier, journalist, and Washington bureau chief, he holds a PhD in theology and an MTh in Orthodox studies from the University of Winchester. The author of several books, including Origen’s Revenge: The Greek and Hebrew Roots of Christian Thinking on Male and Female and The Disappearing Deaconess, Protodeacon Patrick has lectured at numerous universities and seminaries, and continues to write on topics at the intersection of faith, culture, and tradition.
