Tristram (Herman) Engelhardt, Jr.
June 21, 2018

A native of the sovereign Republic of Texas, whose German ancestors settled the area long before Texas became part of the United States, Tris (Reader Herman) was one of founders of the discipline of bioethics in the U. S. Indeed, he was once described as the enfant terrible of bioethics, and anyone who spent even a modicum of time with Tris can readily understand why. Yet, beneath the brilliance, bravura—he held both an M.D. and a Ph.D—and an impish delight in shocking the complacent, Tris was possessed of a generous spirit and loving heart. The number of lives touched by both his erudition and compassion can scarcely be numbered. Herman fell asleep in the Lord with his wife Susan at his side on June 21, 2018, in Houston and is buried at Holy Archangels Monastery in Kendalia, Texas.
